Maximize Your Potential: Applying for 8(a) Certification

Every year the federal government allocates a minimum of 5% of federal contracting funds to small disadvantaged businesses. Some of these federal contracts are restricted to businesses in the 8(a) program, so an 8(a) certification allows your business to compete for these set-aside government contracts. An 8(a) certification is valid for 9 years, during which a business can earn up to $100 million or five times its SBA size limit.

As with other certifications there are some requirements that a business must fulfill to qualify for the the 8(a) program, which among other requirements  include:

• Being a small business according to the SBA standards. 
• Not having already participated in the 8(a) program. 
• Being at least 51 percent owned and controlled by U.S. citizens who are economically and socially disadvantaged. 
• Being owned by someone whose personal net worth is less $850,000 or less. 
• Having the owner manage day-to-day operations and also making long-term decisions.
